Ray of Hope Donation Page

svvya:

Hey everybody! As you may or may not know, I’m going to be working this summer at Ray of Hope, a camp for kids who have emotional behavioral disorders. Many of the kids who attend this camp come from low socioeconomic backgrounds and some of them who would really benefit from attending can’t afford the tuition.

I’m raising money to help provide scholarships for these children, and my goal is to raise enough money for one student to attend Ray of Hope. I would really appreciate it if you check out my fundraising page and consider donating something (anything helps!) to help me reach my goal! If you’re interested in donating, but wary of online donations you can let me know I can get you an envelope to send into the organization.

If you can’t donate, I would also appreciate you spreading the word about my fundraising and the camp to anyone who you think would be interested by reblogging this or sharing the link through Facebook/email/twitter/wherever!

Stop Telling Women How to Not Get Raped - News & Views - EBONY

New rule for 2012: No more ad campaigns and public service announcements targeted at women to teach them how to avoid rape. It’s not effective, it’s offensive, and it’s also a lie. Telling women that they can behave in a certain way to avoid rape creates a false sense of security and it isn’t the most effective way to lower the horrible statistics which show that 1 in 5 women will become victims of a completed or attempted rape in their lifetime. The numbers for African American women are even higher at nearly 1 in 4.

So when something bad happens to a girl, two reactions kick in for people who do not challenge (or even recognize that they believe in) these rules. First, that somebody who broke the rules deserves to be punished. In this case, the punishment of not being a submissive woman is to be forced into submission in a sexual way. The second reaction is that if you just follow the rules, you can shield yourself from monsters. By victim-blaming, we are able to reinforce society’s rules while at the same time believing in an ability to protect ourselves.
